Tennis: WVU Finish Strong at Maryland Invite

College Park, Md. – The West Virginia University women’s tennis team saw a successful final day at the Maryland Invitational on Sunday, Sept. 24, at College Park, Md., securing seven victories.
In Flight B doubles, seniors Kelly Walsh and Ashley Constantine defeated Nguyen/Lederhandler of Yale, 8-6, and juniors Monica Lyskawa and Colleen Speaker defeated Kim/Dashiell of Yale, 4-3.
Lyskawa also secured a singles victory in Flight A on Sunday, defeating Audreea Niculesen of Penn State, 6-3, 6-3.
Junior Natalia Prinz emerged victorious from a nail-biter against Staten Spencer of LSU, 7-6 (5), 4-6, 1-0 (6).
“Natalia’s win came off the heels of a tough loss on Saturday in a very similar match,” said coach Marc Walters. “To pull it out after a defeat the day before tells me a lot about her makeup.”
In a battle of the freshmen, Stephanie LaFortune defeated fellow Mountaineer Gabriela Blaskovicova, 6-3, 6-4. Constantine was also victorious in an inter-squad battle, defeating freshman Monique Burton, 6-2, 6-0.
Finally, Speaker achieved individual success as well on Sunday, defeating Brooke Rogers of Maryland, 6-2, 6-3.
“We continue to mature as a team with each match,” says Walters. “The girls are not intimidated by seeing good players. It’s a good sign that we are ready to start playing at that next level.”
The Mountaineers have the following week off. They will conclude their fall season with the Martha Thorn Invitational, Oct. 6-8, in Morgantown, W.Va.
