MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University volleyball team fell to St. John’s today at the WVU Coliseum. Despite the loss, the Mountaineers kept up with the Red Storm and delivered a thriller of an afternoon. St. John’s (17-1, 2-0 BIG EAST) won the match 3-1 (30-28, 30-28, 27-30, 30-18).
West Virginia (1-15, 0-2 BIG EAST) let St. John’s know early in game one that the team refused to go down without a fight. The game was tied eight separate times, including 27-27 near the end. The Red Storm pulled ahead and took the game 30-28. Both teams boasted three blocks in the contest.
The Mountaineers secured an early 4-1 lead thanks to key kills by outside hitter Abby Tevis and middle blocker Tammy Wolf. The lead changed hands four times before St. John’s pulled ahead 10-9. Game three was a thriller as WVU had only one thing on its mind – a win. The Mountaineers melded as a team to power themselves over the Red Storm, which currently sits atop the BIG EAST. Setter Gina Cusanelli and libero Aurora Ebert-Santos recorded seven and eight digs respectively to help power their team over St. John’s 30-27. Wolf led the team in game three with five blocks.
The Red Storm rebounded in game four. West Virginia fell behind 9-18 and could not recover. Led by libero Kathleen Yee’s six digs, St. John’s recorded a 30-18 win over the Mountaineers.
