QUEENS, N.Y. – The No. 6 West Virginia University women’s soccer team battled St. John’s to a 0-0 tie on Sunday, Sept. 24, at Belson Stadium in Queens, N.Y.
The Mountaineers (8-0-2, 2-0-1 BIG EAST) outshot St. John’s 16 to nine with 10 of the shots being on goal, but Red Storm goalkeeper Jaime Beran had 10 saves to help keep West Virginia off the scoreboard. West Virginia did have eight corner kicks, but could not convert any of the opportunities.
Junior forward Kim Bonilla highlighted the Mountaineer offensive attack. Bonilla had four shots-on-goal while teammate Greer Barnes had two shots-on-goal for West Virginia.
St. John’s (5-1-3, 1-0-2 BIG EAST) forward Natasha Lee had three shots, all of which were on target, while midfielder Amanda Pasciolla had two shots for the Red Storm.
WVU senior goalkeeper Lana Bannerman did her part to keep St. John’s from scoring as she had five saves on nine shots from the Red Storm. Bannerman earned her 30th career shutout and fifth of the season.
The 0-0 tie marks the first time WVU has failed to score in a game this season.
“Our defense played great but we just didn’t finish some of our opportunities that we usually do today,” Coach Nikki Izzo-Brown said. “But we have a big game coming up for us this weekend and we are excited to play a team of Notre Dame’s caliber on Friday.”
West Virginia continues to play away from Morgantown next weekend. The Mountaineers travel to South Bend, Ind., to face No. 1 and undefeated Notre Dame on Friday, Sept. 29, before playing at DePaul on Oct. 1, in Chicago, Ill.
