Tennis: Mountaineers Improve at Maryland Invite

College Park, Md. – The West Virginia University women’s tennis team had another tough day of competition at the Maryland Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 23, at the Tennis Center in College Park, Md. The squad walked away with seven victories.
“The girls are being positive and making the needed adjustments on the court,” says head coach Marc Walters.
In Flight A doubles action, both Gabriela Blaskovicova and Stephanie LaFortune defeated Rhee/Alford from Yale in the consolation bracket. The pair moves on to face fellow Mountaineers Stacey Percival and Natalia Prinz, who defeated Niculesco/Lotto of Penn State.
The Flight B doubles consolation finals will also feature two WVU teams. Kelly Walsh and Ashley Constantine defeated Dohanics/McCarthy of Penn State. They will face Monica Lyskawa and Colleen Speaker, who defeated Senic/Miller of Maryland.
Blaskovicova and LaFortune also saw success in Flight C singles play. Blaskovicova defeated Masha Senic of Maryland, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3, while LaFortune defeated Brooke Rogers of Maryland, 0-6, 6-3, 6-4. The freshmen will now compete against each other in the consolation finals.
Flight D singles competitor Speaker also secured a victory yesterday, defeating Sloane Mathis of LSU, 5-7, 6-0, 6-1. She will move on to face teammate Kathryn Klein in the consolation final.
The final day of the Maryland Invitational will take place Sunday, Sept. 24, at the Tennis Center at College Park.
