MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The No. 6 West Virginia University women’s soccer team remained undefeated and moved to 2-0 in conference play after crushing the Syracuse Orange, 5-0, on Friday, Sept. 22, at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium.
West Virginia (8-0-1, 2-0 BIG EAST) got off to a fast start in the first half as Kim Bonilla put the Mountaineers ahead 1-0 in the second minute by scoring off of a free kick from 19 yards out. Bonilla's free kick came because she was fouled on a breakaway in the game’s opening minutes just outside the 18-yard box by Syracuse goalkeeper Eliza Bennett-Hatten, who was given a red card and ejected from the match.
Syracuse then subbed goalie Candice Hoffman into the game and the Orange were forced to play the remaining 88 minutes with only 10 players.
West Virginia took advantage of the situation and scored just four minutes later when Krystle Kallman headed in Bonilla’s corner to earn a 2-0 lead. WVU would get two more goals to add to their cushion in the 34th and 36th minute from Natalie Cocchi and Deana Everrett, respectively. Everrett now leads the team with nine goals this season, which also ranks second in the BIG EAST.
Cocchi would score again in the 65th minute as she deflected in Bonilla’s corner kick to put the score at 5-0. Cocchi finished the night with two goals while Bonilla ended up with one goal and two assists.
Syracuse (1-7-1, 0-2 BIG EAST) managed just one shot on senior goalkeeper Lana Bannerman, who picked up her fourth shutout of the year and 29th career shutout. Syracuse’s one shot marked the fewest shots allowed ever by a WVU defense against a BIG EAST opponent.
Hoffman had 10 saves on West Virginia’s 33 shots.
West Virginia now holds the lead in the all-time series with Syracuse, 4-3-1, and has outscored its opponents 36-4 this season.
The Mountaineers will take the nation’s top scoring offense on the road to Queens, N.Y., on Sunday, Sept. 24, to face the St. John’s Red Storm at 1 p.m.
WVU leads the series 7-2-1 over St. John’s and took a 3-0 decision in Morgantown last season.
