MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The No. 6 West Virginia University women’s soccer team resumes BIG EAST play this weekend as it hosts Syracuse on Friday, Sept. 22, at 7 p.m., at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium.
West Virginia and Syracuse (1-6-1) are tied in the all-time series, 3-3-1. The Mountaineers and Orange played to a 1-1 tie last year at SU Soccer Stadium in Syracuse, N.Y.
The Mountaineers enter the game with the highest NSCAA ranking in the program’s 11-year history. West Virginia is currently the only school in the country to have both the men’s (No. 8) and women’s soccer programs currently ranked in the top eight in the coaches’ poll.
West Virginia (7-0-1, 1-0 BIG EAST) will bring the nation’s top scoring offense (31 goals / 3.88 goals per game) into the Syracuse game. WVU has outscored its opponents 31-4 this season and also ranks 24th in the country in goals allowed a game.
A trio of players has led the potent West Virginia offense. Sophomore forward Deana Everrett has scored eight goals this season, which is second in the country behind Old Dominion’s Katherine Watson. Junior midfielder Ashley Banks and junior forward Kim Bonilla have also helped the Mountaineers find the back of the net frequently this season. Bonilla’s six assists and 16 points (5 G, 6 A) rank her in the NCAA top 20, while Banks is ranked in the top 30 with 15 points (6 G, 3 A) and also in goals per game (0.75).
The undefeated Mountaineers are joined by three other unbeaten BIG EAST teams as No. 1 Notre Dame (8-0), Villanova (9-0) and Louisville (6-0-1) all have unblemished records in the National Division.
WVU will also travel to Queens, N.Y., on Sunday, Sept. 24, to face the St. John’s Red Storm at 1 p.m. St. John’s is just 2-7-1 in the all-time series with West Virginia. WVU won the last meeting between the two schools, 3-0, last season in Morgantown.
