MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The No. 7 West Virginia women’s soccer team battled No. 21 Virginia to a 1-1 tie on Sunday, Sept. 17, in Morgantown.
“Both teams battled and fought really hard today,” Coach Nikki Izzo-Brown said. “The West Virginia – Virginia games are always close and this game wasn’t any different than the games in the past.”
After a scoreless first half, West Virginia (7-0-1, 1-0) took control of the game in the 62nd minute when Deana Everrett streaked down the left side and crossed the ball to Amanda Cicchini. Cicchini headed the ball out of the air just past of the goalkeeper’s reach and in off the bottom of the crossbar to give the Mountaineers a 1-0 advantage.
Virginia (5-2-1) got the equalizer just six minutes later as Kelly Quinn punched in a goal from six yards out and set the game at 1-1.
The Mountaineers had one more great chance in the regulation but Virginia goalie Christina de Vries came up with a big save on Carolyn Blank’s shot from atop the 18-yard box.
Virginia’s Quinn also had an opportunity to score in the final minutes of regulation, but WVU’s Lana Bannerman came out of her net to challenge Quinn one-on-one and make a clutch save.
West Virginia dodged a bullet in the first minute of overtime when Quinn ripped a shot from 30 yards out that Bannerman was able to deflect off the crossbar. WVU’s defense shined one last time when Robin Rushton stopped Jess Rostedt’s breakaway with 30 seconds left to end the game in a draw.
The Mountaineers and Cavaliers both had 15 shots on offense while Bannerman and de Vries both had five saves in net, respectively. WVU had nine corner kicks compared to Virginia’s two.
The Cavaliers lead the series 5-1-1, with WVU’s only win coming in Charlottesville, Va., back in 2002.
WVU resumes BIG EAST play against Syracuse on Friday, Sept. 22, at 7 p.m., before starting a five-game BIG EAST road trip.
