Women's Tennis: WVU Has Successful Second Day

West Point, N.Y. – The West Virginia University tennis team built on the success of day one and moved six girls into the final round on the second day of competition at the Eastern Collegiate Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 16, at West Point, N.Y.
At No. 1 singles, junior Monica Lyskawa defeated Gabby Pasternak of Quinnipiac, 5-7, 6-0, 10-3, in the quarterfinals and Sarah Mayer of Siena, 6-3, 3-6, 10-1, in the semifinal round. Lyskawa will face number one seed Daisy Ames of Brown in the finals on Sunday at the Litchenburg Tennis Center. Freshman Stephanie LaFortune will also play in the finals on Sunday. The rookie defeated Carlie Smith of Pittsburgh, 6-3, 6-3, and number one seed Seton Pariser of Brown, 6-3, 5-7, 10-5, to earn a spot in the No. 4 singles flight, where she will battle Tanja Vucetic of Brown for the championship.
In doubles action, the No. 1 team of freshman Monique Burton and senior Ashley Constantine cruised to the final round, defeating Shaina Murngan-Monica Myers of Stonybrook, 9-8, and Nikki Adams-Shawna Sarson of Quinnipiac, 8-3. Burton-Constantine will meet Ellen DeJong-Laura Murillo of UMass in the final round. At No. 2, juniors Stacey Percival and Natalia Prinz also overpowered the competition to reach the finals. Percival-Prinz defeated Kate Danaher-Therese Griffin of Providence, 8-0, and Kristin Beehler-Jessica Shurtz of Army, 8-6, and will face Maude Lecluyse-Michele Spiess of UMass in the championship.
Senior Kelly Walsh put up a tough fight in the No. 2 singles quarterfinal round before eventually falling to Sandy Wijeratne of Stonybrook, 6-3, 6-4. Freshman Gabrielle Blaskovicova also had a grueling day of competition, squeezing past Amanda Petruzzi of Quinnipiac, 6-0, 7-6(7), in the No. 3 singles quarterfinals. The second seeded Blaskovicova was defeated by Kelley LoRusso of UConn, 7-5, 7-5, in the semifinal round.
The invitational, hosted by the United States Military Academy, wraps up on Sunday, Sept. 17.
