Volleyball: WVU Defeated by Akron

DAYTON, Ohio – The West Virginia University volleyball team was defeated by Akron tonight in the team’s last match at the Raider Challenge.
Akron (6-7) won the match 3-1 (23-30, 30-26, 30-18, 31-29).
After being tied nine separate times, West Virginia (1-12) emerged the victor of game one by a score of 30-23.
Akron sought to avenge its game one loss by coming out strong early in game two. The Mountaineers kept the game close, but Akron won 30-26.
WVU could not match Akron’s pace in game three, allowing the Zips to score 10 consecutive points before registering one of its own. Akron went on to win game three 30-18.
The Mountaineers came out with fire in their eyes for game four. West Virginia looked like the dominant team midway through the game, leading the Zips by as much as five points. However, Akron battled back from the deficit to win game four 31-29.
WVU was led by libero Aurora Ebert-Santos’ 25 digs. Middle blocker Lisa Hough recorded five blocks for the Mountaineers. Teammate Abby Tevis, an outsider hitter, registered 24 kills and 26 points.
West Virginia will next take on Marshall in Charleston, W.Va., on Sept. 19.
