MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University rifle coach Jon Hammond today announced the team’s 2006-07 schedule.
The Mountaineers return all seven of their shooters from last season. Three talented freshmen will be thrown into the mix to help the team improve its 2005-06 record of 4-7.
West Virginia will look to avenge its final loss of last season when it opens against Memphis on Oct. 16 at the WVU Rifle Range. WVU faced the Tigers at the NCAA Qualifier in 2006. In what would be their last match of the season, the Mountaineers fell to Memphis by a score of 4585-4612.
WVU will be challenged by a tough November schedule. After facing 2006 NCAA third place finisher Army on Oct. 28, the Mountaineers will have to battle Great American Rifle Conference powerhouses Nebraska and Kentucky in the same weekend.
“Army, Nebraska and Kentucky are going to be the toughest matches this year,” Hammond says. “Those three have really dominated the conference. They’re where the standard is at.”
