MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - West Virginia University men’s soccer player Jarrod Smith has been named to the CollegeSoccerNews.com national team of the week as well as being named the BIG EAST offensive player of the week on Monday, Sept. 11.
Smith becomes just the second WVU player in school history to earn a spot on the CSN national team of the week. Former defender Rusty Girton was selected on Sept. 27, 2004.
The BIG EAST award is the second for Smith in his career. He was named the offensive player of the week previously on Sept. 27, 2004.
The Havelock North New Zealand, native was an instrumental reason the Mountaineers (5-0-1, 2-0 BIG EAST) tallied two conference wins over the weekend. Smith scored a goal and assisted on another in WVU’s 2-0 win over Cincinnati on Sept. 8. He then tallied two more goals in the team’s 2-1 victory over Louisville on Sept. 10.
After sitting out the first two matches of the season Smith has now scored four goals in four games, including three game winners.
The pair of BIG EAST wins boosted West Virginia to No. 14 in the Soccer America Top 25 poll and No. 16 in the CollegeSoccerNews.com Top 30 poll. The Mountaineers climbed nine spots from last week when they ranked No. 23 and 25, respectively.
WVU is the highest ranking BIG EAST school in the Soccer America poll, while it’s next opponent, South Florida, is the only conference team that ranks ahead of it in the CSN poll. The Bulls currently sport a 4-2-0 record with a 2-0-0 conference mark and rank No. 15.
West Virginia and USF meet on Friday, Sept. 15, at 7:30 p.m. in Tampa, Fla., at USF Soccer Stadium.
