MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - Senior forward Jarrod Smith scored both of his team’s goals to lead the No. 10-rated West Virginia University men’s soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Louisville on Sunday, Sept. 10, at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium in Morgantown.
The Havelock North, New Zealand, native struck first in the 13th minute when he headed a cross off of a corner kick into the back if the net from 10 yards out. The assist on the play went to midfielder Dan Stratford for his fourth of the season.
The Cardinals (2-3-1, 1-1-0) hung around in the match with a header goal of their own when Steve Sloan scored from eight yards out on a ball passed to him by teammate Frank Jonke. The goal was the first of the season for Sloan.
Smith struck again with his third game-winning goal of the season on yet another header in the 72nd minute. This time it was fellow forward Jyler Noviello dishing him the ball that he headed past goalkeeper David Simolike from eight yards out.
In four games played this season Smith has netted four goals to lead the team in scoring. He has also tallied an assist to total nine points on the season.
Senior goalkeeper Nick Noble recorded two saves in the win as he played the full 90 minutes, allowing one goal. Louisville’s Simolike made one save on the afternoon.
WVU (5-0-1) has now put together the second longest unbeaten streak to start a season in school history. The 1968 team posted an 8-0-1 record through the regular season before losing to Saint Louis in the first round of the NCAA tournament.
The Mountaineers' two goals allowed through six games is the fewest ever allowed by a team in school history. West Virginia currently holds a 0.32 goals against average in 2006.
WVU hits the road for the first time this season when it begins a three-match road trip with South Florida on Friday, Sept. 15. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
