MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The No. 17 West Virginia University women’s soccer team scored a school-record eight goals as the Mountaineers cruised past St. Bonaventure 8-0, on Sunday, Sept. 10, at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium.
WVU’s eight goals eclipsed the previous school mark of seven goals set by the Mountaineers in a 7-0 win over Ohio on Aug. 29, 2004.
Kim Bonilla highlighted the Mountaineers’ eight-goal attack. The Dumfries, Va., native tied the school record by scoring three goals, two in the final 10 minutes of the second half. Bonilla opened the game’s scoring with a goal in 19th minute and added goals in the 82nd and 84th minute to complete the hat trick.
The Mountaineers blew a 3-0 game wide open in the second half by scoring five goals in the final 25 minutes. Deana Everrett scored goals in the 65th and 69th minute, while Krystle Kallman got her second goal of the game by heading in a corner kick to stretch the lead out to 6-0. Bonilla added the final two goals, one from Kiley Harris, and the other off a rebound to round out the game’s scoring.
Senior goalkeeper Lana Bannerman picked up her 28th career shutout. Bannerman had two saves on four Bonnie shots. West Virginia had 36 shots with 19 shots being on goal. Goalkeeper Lisa Eberhart made nine saves for the Bonnies.
“We had a great team effort from our girls today,” Coach Nikki Izzo-Brown said. “They played well all weekend and this is a great way to start the season going into our conference schedule.”
West Virginia is off to its first 6-0 start in school history and the Mountaineers resume their four-game homestand on Friday, Sept. 15, when they host rival Pitt at 7 p.m.
