MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University women’s soccer player Kim Bonilla has been named Top Drawer Soccer women’s college soccer player of the week.
Bonilla, a junior forward, came off the bench to tally two goals and three assists in two games over the weekend at the James Madison Invitational. In WVU’s first game against Richmond, Bonilla scored in the 37th minute on a long pass from Greer Barnes and assisted Deana Everrett in her second goal as WVU shutout Richmond, 3-0.
Bonilla then gave WVU a spark off the bench in the second half on Sunday against James Madison as she scored one goal and picked up two assists off of two free kicks. The Mountaineers went on to score two more goals and defeat the Dukes, 5-1.
The Dumfries, Va., native was also named as a forward on the publication’s national team of the week. The team chose 18 players for their outstanding individual efforts across the country.
West Virginia (2-0) enters the weekend ranked No. 12 in both the Soccer America and Soccer Buzz’s polls. This week, the Mountaineers climbed from No. 21 to the 12th spot in Soccer Buzz, while also moving up five spots from 17th to 12th in Soccer America’s poll. WVU has now been ranked in at least one major poll for 43 of the last 45 weeks.
West Virginia returns to action when it hosts the Western Michigan Broncos (0-1-1) on Friday, Sept. 1, at 7 p.m., at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium in the 2006 home opener.
