MORGANTOWN, W.Va.– The West Virginia University volleyball team fell to Akron today in the first match of the day at the West Virginia Classic, hosted at the WVU Coliseum.
Akron (1-1) swept the match 3-0 (30-22, 30-24, 30-25).
West Virginia (1-1) started game one with a 3-0 lead and convincing play. Akron, however, fired back to reach a commanding 20-10 lead. The Zips went on to win the game 30-22. This was the first game Akron won in the tournament after dropping three straight to Indiana last night. The Zips were assisted by Catherine Wolfe’s five kills. Megan Rodriguez and Liz Martin, both of Akron, recorded four digs each.
Motivated by their win in game one, Akron came out strong in game two. Not even the eight digs recorded by WVU’s Aurora Ebert-Santos could top the Mountaineers over the Zips. Akron totaled nine kills and four blocks in their 30-24 game two win.
Akron took an impressive 21-10 lead in game three. But West Virginia refused to give up easily. In a heroic effort, the Mountaineers battled back to within just four points of the Zips, putting the score at 25-29. However, with the help of Catherine Wolfe’s five kills, the Zips topped the Mountaineers 30-25.
Next up for the Zips is a 5:30 p.m. match tonight against Oakland. WVU will close out the West Virginia Classic tonight with an 8:00 p.m. contest against Indiana.
