HARRISONBURG, Va. – The No. 18 West Virginia University women’s soccer team received two second half goals from Deana Everrett to help the Mountaineers cruise past Richmond, 3-0, on Friday at the JMU Soccer Complex in Harrisonburg, Va.
Everrett’s first goal came just over 10 minutes into the second half as she dribbled through the Richmond defense and slotted the ball in the right side of the net past the keeper to put the score at 2-0.
“Deana did what she does so well and that’s score goals,” Coach Nikki Izzo-Brown said. “She had a great game tonight. It was a great team effort; everyone was focused and ready.”
Everrett would strike again just six minutes later as Kim Bonilla set the sophomore forward up for her second goal of the evening and put the Spiders away, 3-0. Everrett now has six career goals at West Virginia.
WVU (1-0) bombarded Spider keeper Kate Hudson with 30 shots while the Spiders managed just seven in the direction of senior goalkeeper Lana Bannerman. Bannerman recorded three saves in 80 minutes and Mallory Beck played the final 10 minutes to preserve the team shutout.
“It was great that Lana and our defense was able to the get the shutout tonight,” said Izzo-Brown.
West Virginia got on the board late in the first half when Bonilla gave the Mountaineers a spark off the bench on offense. In the 37th minute, sophomore Greer Barnes got possession at midfield and played a long pass over the top of the Richmond defense to set Bonilla up for WVU’s first score of the night.
The Mountaineers return to action at the JMU Invitational on Sunday, Aug. 27, when they face host James Madison at 1:30 p.m.
