Volleyball: WVU Set For Season Opener

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University volleyball team will open its 2006 season by hosting the West Virginia Classic on Friday, Aug. 25, and Saturday, Aug. 26, at the WVU Coliseum. Admission is free.
Akron, Indiana and Oakland will travel to Morgantown to open their seasons at the two-day tournament.
WVU, ranked No. 12 in the BIG EAST preseason poll, will compete against Oakland at 7:30 p.m. on Aug. 25.
The Mountaineers will continue with a 12:00 p.m. match against Akron, Saturday, Aug. 26. The team will close out the tournament with an 8 p.m. contest against Indiana the same night.
The first match, slated to begin at 5:00 p.m. on Aug. 25, features Indiana versus Akron. Oakland and Indiana will meet at 2:30 p.m. Saturday. Akron will close out its portion of the tournament with a 5:30 challenge against Oakland.
After finishing 16-13 in 2005, the Mountaineers are hoping to build upon last year’s success. West Virginia is led by head coach Veronica Hammersmith, assistant coach Jennifer Corkum and graduate assistant Bakeer Ganes. Hammersmith enters her 32nd season as the leader of WVU’s volleyball program with a 537-498 career mark.
