MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Nine members of the 2006 West Virginia University gymnastics team were honored by the National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches/Women (NACGC/W) as scholar-athletes for the 2005-06 year.
WVU was one of 13 schools that had at least nine gymnasts with a grade point average of 3.5 or higher. That number set a new school record, eclipsing the number set by the 2005 squad, who had seven gymnasts with that honor.
“We are very excited that over half of our team qualified for this award,” gymnastics coach Linda Burdette said. “I’m very pleased to see that they are working as hard in the classroom as they are in the gym.”
Junior Kara Weaver, an exercise physiology major, led the team with a perfect 4.0 average and was one of 54 gymnasts to do so in the country this year.
Other gymnasts honored were junior Amie Bouchier (sport management), senior Aimee Brown (criminology), senior Janáe Cox (elementary education), now-graduated senior Alyssa DeSantis (textiles, apparel & merchandising), junior Jamie Gold (exercise physiology), senior Cheryl Goldenfield (sport management), junior Rachel Hardin (advertising) and junior Margaret Ann Moore (elementary education).
To be eligible, student-athletes must have earned a grade point average of at least 3.5, during both the fall and spring semesters.
