MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The No. 18-ranked West Virginia University women’s soccer team topped N.C. State, 4-1, in an exhibition match at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium Saturday afternoon. The Mountaineers and Wolfpack played three 30-minute periods in the session.
WVU’s scoring got underway early in the game’s first period when N.C. State couldn’t clear the ball out of the box and senior Cathy Abel capitalized on the opportunity to net the Mountaineers’ first goal.
Junior preseason all-BIG EAST selection Ashley Banks knocked in WVU’s second goal of the day in the second period and West Virginia added another score later when Deana Everrett headed Robin Rushton’s cross into the back of the net.
Junior Kim Bonilla got the final goal for the Mountaineers in the session’s third period. Kiley Harris sent a ball into the box that Bonilla was able to flick past the keeper, rounding out WVU scoring for the rest of the afternoon.
West Virginia continues to be without the services of preseason all-BIG EAST selection Amanda Cicchini, who is currently playing for Team Canada at the FIFA Under-20 World Championships in Russia.
The Mountaineers open the season against Richmond, Friday, Aug. 25, at 5 p.m., at the James Madison Invitational, in Harrisonburg, Va.
