Perry’s team finished the 18-hole scramble with a 15-under-par 55, tied with the team captained by WVU assistant wrestling coach Greg Jones. In the playoff, the two teams birdied the par-four No. 1 and 2 holes to set up a third sudden-death hole on the 178-yard par-three No. 3.
David Hawkins’ tee shot landed seven feet below the cup setting up the winning birdie putt by Randy Witt for Perry’s team. Unofficially it is the longest playoff in WVU Classic history.
“There was not a hole somewhere that at least one of us did not play a role in winning the hole,” said Perry. “The key man I have to give credit to is David because when we allowed him to putt he did well. Fortunately he didn’t have to putt as much but what he did for us with his drives and his irons is what allowed us to win.”
Other members of the winning team were Dave McClure and Ed Lincoln. Duke Perry is president and CEO of the WVU Foundation.
Jones’ second-place team consisted of Jay Cipoletti, Tom Isaac, Doug Houser, Chad Love and Robert Lilly.
More than 100 golfers participated in this year’s event which raised nearly $50,000 for West Virginia University student athletes. Charter Communications sponsored the 2006 WVU Classic.
