MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University running back Steve Slaton and quarterback Patrick White were named to the 70th annual Maxwell Award watch list for the collegiate player of the year, and linebacker Kevin McLee was named to the Bednarik Award watch list for the nation’s top defensive player.
Maxwell Football Club president Ron Jaworski made the announcement Tuesday.
Slaton burst onto the college football scene last year as a true freshman, running for a Sugar Bowl record 204 yards against Georgia and finishing the season with 1,128 yards and 17 touchdowns in just 10 games. The Levittown, Pa., resident averaged 5.5 yards per rush.
Like Slaton, White had a breakout freshman season after taking over the starting job following West Virginia's triple-overtime victory over Louisville. White ran for more than 200 yards in a home win against Pitt and also had a 177-yard rushing performance in the season finale against South Florida. He also completed more than 55 percent of his pass attempts.
McLee was an all-Big East linebacker last year as a junior, ranking second on the team in tackles with 78. The Uniontown, Pa., native also had seven tackles for losses, a pair of sacks and an interception.
Twelve semifinalists for each award will be announced in October, 2006, and the field will be trimmed to three finalists in November, 2006. The winners of the Maxwell and Bednarik Awards will be announced at the Home Dept College Football Awards Show that will be televised on ESPN in December, 2006.
The formal presentation of the Maxwell and Bednarik Awards will take place at the Maxwell Football Club Awards Banquet in March, 2007.
