MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University senior men’s basketball player Johannes Herber is one of 58 student-athletes awarded a postgraduate scholarship of $7,500. Herber earned a perfect cumulative 4.0 grade point average in political science.
To qualify for an NCAA postgraduate scholarship, a student-athlete must have an overall grade point average of 3.2 on a 4.0 scale or its equivalent, and must have performed with distinction as a member of the varsity team in the sport in which the student-athlete was nominated. The student-athlete must have behaved, both on and off the field, in a manner that has brought credit to the student-athlete, the institution and intercollegiate athletics. The student-athlete must intend to continue academic work beyond the baccalaureate degree as a full-time or part-time graduate student.
Candidates are screened by seven regional selection committees, and the award recipients are selected by the NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship Committee.
Previously, Herber was one of 30 West Virginia University students recognized by the WVU Foundation for outstanding academic achievement, and the forward also was named the Big East Scholar Athlete of the Year and was presented with a $2,000 scholarship.
Herber helped West Virginia to a pair of NCAA tournament trips in 2005 and 2006, advancing to the “Sweet 16” both seasons and making an “Elite Eight” appearance in 2005.
Herber is a native of Darmstadt, Germany.
