CLEARWATER, Fla. – No. 5-seeded West Virginia will take on top-seeded Notre Dame in a Big East tournament second-round game on Wednesday at 8 pm at Bright House Networks Field in Clearwater, Fla.
The Mountaineers (36-20) got an eighth-inning grand-slam home run from catcher David Carpenter to erase a 3-0 St. John’s lead on the way to a 5-3 victory. In the nightcap, the Irish got an 11 strike out performance from starting pitcher Wade Korpi to defeat No. 8-seeded South Florida.
Notre Dame (42-14-1) plated single runs in the third and fifth innings off Bulls ace Casey Hudspeth, and tacked on an insurance run in the eighth.
West Virginia and Notre Dame did not meet during the regular season for the first time since the two teams joined the Big East in 1996. West Virginia has faced Notre Dame seven times in Big East tournament play with the Irish claiming five of those decisions.
Sophomore lefthander Matt Yurish is scheduled to start for the Mountaineers. Yurish ran his record to 6-2 with a 5-3 victory over South Florida last Friday night. The Martinsburg resident threw a no-hitter against Coppin State earlier this year.
WEPM in Martinsburg has been added to the eight-station MSN lineup for Wednesday night’s game. Air time is 7:50 pm. The contest can also be heard on the Internet through CSTV All Access.
