MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University baseball team jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning and never looked back as the Mountaineers defeated Akron, 10-6 on Tuesday night at Hawley Field in Morgantown, W.Va.
The Mountaineers (34-18) were the beneficiaries of seven earned runs given up by the Akron (15-33) defense.
WVU increased its lead to 6-0 through the first two innings, but the Zips bounced back with three in the fifth and two in the sixth. The Mountaineers tacked on four runs in the sixth to cruise to their 34th win of the season.
Junior West Virginia pitcher Trent Ridgley earned his first career win on Tuesday in his first career start. The Massillon, Ohio, native threw 5 2/3 innings and allowed five runs on eight hits, while striking out three and walking three.
The Zips used a total of six pitchers in Tuesday’s game with none lasting more than two innings. Starter Tom Farmer was saddled with the loss despite not allowing an earned run and only pitching the first inning.
Several individual records were set by WVU players on the evening. Right fielder Stan Posluszny went 3 for 5 against the Zips with three RBI, a home run and a double to take sole possession of first on the school’s career RBI (169), doubles (58) and career extra base hits (91) lists. He passed former Mountaineer Mark Landers in all three categories; Landers played from 1991-94.
Freshman center fielder Adam White went 1 for 2 at the plate including a sacrifice bunt in the seventh inning to break the school record for sacrifice hits in a season with 14. Former center fielder Tim Neumark held the old record of 13 set in 1999.
The Mountaineers return to action with a three-game series against South Florida on May 18-20, at Hawley Field to wrap up the regular season.
