MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - Men’s basketball captain J.D. Collins and women’s cross country/track captain Susan Davis have won the 2006 Fred Schaus Captain’s Award, presented annually to West Virginia University’s most outstanding varsity team captain. This year marks the fifth time that a tie occurred in the voting.
The winner must display outstanding sportsmanship and leadership, representing WVU well in all aspects. Winners are selected by the WVU Athletic Council.
Collins, a two-year captain from Houston, Texas, was a four-year starter at point guard for the Mountaineers. He finished his WVU career with 402 career assists, ranking seventh in school history, and led the BIG EAST in assist to turnover ratio as a senior (2.42). Collins started the second-most games in school history with 121 starts and tied the school record for career games played with 128. A member of the Athletic Director’s Academic Honor Roll and a BIG EAST academic all-star, Collins will graduate later this week with a degree in communications.
Davis, a four-year letterman from Romney, W.Va., earned All-America honors in the distance medley relay in 2005. She was a three-time NCAA qualifier (twice in cross country, once in track), a two-time NCAA regional qualifier in steeplechase and earned a combined 10 all-BIG EAST honors in cross country and track. A member of the Athletic Director’s Academic Honor Roll and four-team Dean’s list member, Davis is currently pursuing a master’s degree in elementary education.
The award was started to honor the retirement of Fred Schaus, who had outstanding success as a Mountaineer basketball player, coach and athletic director.
