MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia University baseball team continues BIG EAST play with a three-game home series this weekend against Villanova, beginning on Friday, April 28, at 7 p.m. at Hawley Field.
The Mountaineers (27-14, 7-8 BIG EAST) will be looking to rebound from a tough, 9-2, home loss to Longwood on Wednesday, April 26. WVU has now dropped 10 of its last 12 games, but has won its last two BIG EAST contests.
West Virginia is tied with Rutgers (19-18-1, 7-8 BIG EAST) in the current conference standings with Rutgers for seventh place and just ahead of eighth place South Florida (19-23, 8-10 BIG EAST).
Outfielder Stan Posluszny needs just six homers to break Tim McCabe’s career record of 35 set from 2000-03. Posluszny’s 75 career extra base hits currently ranks fourth all-time in school history and tied for second in career doubles (52).
Villanova (22-18, 5-9 BIG EAST) comes into the weekend in ninth place and currently on the outside looking in at the BIG EAST tournament, which takes the top eight teams. Friday will mark the Wildcats’ first night game of the 2006 season. Last season they were 3-2 in night contests.
The Mountaineers are 18-8 all-time versus Villanova. In 2005, WVU took two of three games against the Wildcats on the road at Villanova Ballpark in Plymouth Meeting, Pa.
