MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (April 26, 2006) - West Virginia University women's tennis coach Dan Silverstein today announced the signing of Stephanie Lafortune from Quebec, Canada, as his final recruit for the 2006-07 school year.
With her current Quebec U18 rank at 12th, she was the collegial circuit champion for the past two seasons, in 2004-05 and most recently in 2005-06.
"Stephanie is another impact player for us," head coach Dan Silverstein said. "One of her biggest assets coming to West Virginia is her being a left-handed player and dominating a lot of points from the baseline."
Coached by Yann Rapini, Lafortune was crowned Quebec U16 doubles champion in 2004 and was a finalist at the Quebec U18 doubles championship that same year. Since 2002, she has consistently been a top-ranked player as she was seventh in Quebec best U14, eighth in 2004 for Quebec best U16 and ninth in 2005 as Quebec best U18. She competed four times at the National Canadian Championships. She won or was a finalist at several provincial tournaments in Quebec.
Lafortune attended College Durocher and is currently in CEGEP at College Jean-de-Brebeuf, a two-year program needed before going to a university. She is the daughter of Alain Lafortune and Patricia Manzi.
"She's another student-athlete that will be academically sound and have a great four years at West Virginia," Silverstein said.
