Women's Tennis: WVU Gets Big Win Over Syracuse

TAMPA, Fla. - The West Virginia University women's tennis team defeated sixth-seeded Syracuse for the first time in school history, 4-2, on Saturday, April 22, in Tampa, Fla.
The Mountaineers (11-10) now advance to compete for fifth place at the BIG EAST tournament against St. John's.
"This was a total team effort," head coach Dan Silverstein said. "This is by far the biggest win in my five years at West Virginia and I could not be more proud of the way this team has stepped up and performed at the tournament."
West Virginia continued to play impressively in doubles competition as senior Raynie Theis and junior Kelly Walsh got an an 8-3 win over Maria Vasilyeva/Wei-Ming Long at No.2.
Prinz clinched the win for the Mountaineers with her win at No.2 singles over Catherine Zawadski, 6-4, 1-6, 6-2. Sophomore Monica Lyskawa bounced back after losing the first set to Victoria Vayenber, 0-6, to win the final two (6-2, 6-2) for the victory at No. 1. Percival dominated Katie Bramante, 6-2, 6-2, at No.3, while Walsh finished off Maria Vasilyeva, 6-2, 7-5 at No.4
Theis fell to Ashley Lipton in a hard fought 6-2, 5-7, 6-1 match at No. 5. Speaker's match at No.6 with Wie-Ming Long was unfinished with the score 6-3, 5-6, 1-0 after West Virginia had clinched the win.
Percival and Prinz were defeated by Victoria Vaynberd/Catherine Zawdski, 8-5 at No.1 doubles. Junior Ashley Constantine and Speaker lost to Ashley Lipton/Caroline Huighard, 8-5, at No. 3.
The Mountaineers will play for fifth place tomorrow, Sunday, April 23, against St. John's. First serve is set for 9 a.m.
