Women's Tennis: WVU Gets Win Over Duquesne

PITTSBURGH, Pa. - The West Virginia University women's tennis team won their sixth straight match and closed out the regular season with a 4-0 win over Duquesne, Tuesday, April 18, in Pittsburgh, Pa.
The Mountaineers (9-10, 6-3 BIG EAST) won the doubles point with two key victories. At No.1, sophomores Stacey Percival and Natalia Prinz teamed up for an 8-6 win over Hughes/Poole. Senior Raynie Theis and junior Kelly Walsh clinched the doubles point at No.2 by defeating Sailer/Bezjak, 8-4.
In singles action, Percival won at No.3 over Rebecca Poole, 6-0, 6-7, 6-1. Theis defeated Alicia McNamara at No.5, while sophomore Colleen Speaker got a win at No.6 over Abigail Ball, 6-2, 6-0.
The match was called early after the Mountaineers had already closed out the match with four points. Prinz was leading Johanna Bezjak, 2-6, 6-3, 5-2 at No.1, while sophomore Monica Lyskawa was ahead of Jacqueline Hughes at No.2, 6-3, 6-1. Walsh was leading Andrea Sailer at No.4.
"Duquesne was up but our girls fought back and showed a lot of character today," head coach Dan Silverstein said. "Riding a six-game winning streak into the BIG EAST tournament gives us a lot of momentum and we're up for the challenge."
West Virginia is seeded seventh in the BIG EAST tournament which gets underway on Thursday, April 20. The Mountaineers are set to face No.10 Seton Hall at 9 a.m. WVU defeated the Pirates, 4-3, back on April 7.
