MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Sophomore left-handed pitcher Matt Yurish has been named one of “Louisville Slugger’s” National Player of the Week as selected by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper for the week of April 10.
The Martinsburg, W.Va., product became the seventh pitcher in school history to throw a no-hitter in Tuesday’s seven-inning, 11-0 win over Coppin State. Yurish also becomes the third pitcher in WVU history to throw a seven-inning no-hitter. Yurish struck out eight batters with five walks, while holding the Eagles hitless in his fourth win of the season.
Yurish (4-1) was also named to the BIG EAST weekly honor roll for his dominant performance on the mound on Tuesday.
The Mountaineers return to the road for a non-conference matchup with the Ohio Bobcats in Athens, Ohio, on Tuesday, April 11, at 6 p.m.
West Virginia (25-7, 5-4 BIG EAST) looks to bounce back from a winless weekend trip to BIG EAST opponent Rutgers in which the Scarlet Knights outscored WVU by a combined score of 21-9 in three games. The Mountaineers now are tied for fifth with Rutgers (13-14-1, 5-4 BIG EAST) in the BIG EAST standings.
Freshman center fielder Adam White continues to lead WVU in batting average (.439) and steals (16) while third baseman Justin Jenkins is batting .403 with seven home runs and 30 RBI from the No. 3 spot in the lineup this season.
