CONWAY, S.C. – The West Virginia University baseball team was downed by Coastal Carolina, 8-1, on Sunday, March 5, in WVU’s final game at the Coastal Carolina Tournament in Conway, S.C.
Chanticleer right-handed pitcher Kevin Marrie (2-1) pitched a complete game and held the high-powered Mountaineer offense in check all afternoon. Marrie limited WVU to five hits and one run, while Coastal was able to score runs in six different innings on 15 Chanticleer hits.
The loss goes to Mountaineer starter Matt Yurish (0-1), who gave up eight hits and five earned runs in 4.1 innings on the mound.
Adam White went 2 for 3 and extended his hitting streak to eight games. WVU third baseman Justin Jenkins hit a home run to left field in the top of the ninth to prevent the shutout.
Centerfielder Dom Duggan led Coastal, going 3 for 5 with two RBIs while teammate Brant Peacher went 2 for 5 with two RBIs. Coastal improves to 4-9 on the season.
The Mountaineers (6-3) finish up 1-2 in the Coastal Carolina Tournament and return to Morgantown for a home-opening doubleheader with Niagara on Tuesday, March 7.
