ATLANTA, Ga. – West Virginia University swimmer Pablo Marmolejo placed 13th in the 200 breast in the NCAA Championship finals on Saturday, March 25, at the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center in Atlanta, Ga.
Marmolejo, a sophomore from Mexico City, Mexico finished the race in 1:46.22.
“He swam a good race and was right there with some of the top swimmers in the country,” head coach Sergio Lopez said.
Marmolejo’s swim capped off an extraordinary season for West Virginia. The Mountaineers had only earned team points once in school history back in 1983 with three. West Virginia closed out this year’s championships with 16 total team points and placed 30th, the highest of any BIG EAST school.
On Thursday, the 200 free relay team finished 13th with a time of 1:19.98. Senior Chris Hagedorn, freshman Andrew Langenfeld, sophomore Nick Delic and junior Kyle Williams combined for the race. On Friday, Delic took 13th in the 100 breast in a time of 54.09.
“I’m very happy with the way they swam,” Lopez said. “It was a great learning experience for them and they’ll know what to expect next time.”
