Women's Tennis: Mountaineers Downed by Lamar

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The West Virginia University women’s tennis team fell to Lamar, 4-2, at the Lady Eagle Classic on Saturday, March 25, in Hattiesburg, Miss.
“We’ve got to keep playing and fighting to get back on the winning track,” head coach Dan Silverstein said. “Hopefully we can do that tomorrow against Southern Miss and continue on throughout the rest of the season.”
The Mountaineers (3-9, 2-3 BIG EAST) were lead by sophomore Stacey Percival who defeated Tanya Roberts at No.3, 6-3, 7-6 (7-4). Junior Catherine Koontz stepped up big and filled in for sophomore Colleen Speaker by getting a win at No.6 over Kendall Gibbs, 6-3, 6-4. Percival teamed up with senior Raynie Theis for another win on the day at No.2 doubles defeating P.Martinez/Roberts, 8-3.
Sophomore Monica Lyskawa fell to Andrea Martinez, 6-3, 6-4 at No.1 while junior Natalia Prinz lost to Tara Shelander at No.2, 6-1, 6-1. At No.4, Kelly Walsh battled Pamela Martinez but fell 1-6, 7-5, 6-1. Theis played Maria Guiterrez but the match was called at 6-7, 6-0. In more doubles action, junior Ashley Constantine and Koontz lost to Gibbs/Guiterrez at No.1, 8-5. At No.3, Prinz/Walsh fell to A.Martinez/Shelander, 8-4.
West Virginia will play its final match of the Lady Eagle Classic tomorrow, March 26, against host team Southern Mississippi at 9 a.m.
