Women's Tennis: WVU Defeated by Syracuse

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The West Virginia University women's tennis team fell to BIG EAST rival Syracuse, 4-0, at the Lady Eagle Classic on Friday, March 24, in Hattiesburg, Miss.
The Mountaineers (3-8, 2-3 BIG EAST) got strong efforts but were unable to overcome the Orange. Sophomore Colleen Speaker fell to Maria Vasilyeva, 6-1, 6-2 at No. 4. Kelly Walsh battled at No. 5 in a 6-1, 6-1 loss to Ashley Lipton. No. 6 Ashley Constantine was defeated by Wei-Ming Leong, 6-2, 6-2. The duo of Raynie Theis and Stacey Percival at No.1 doubles fell to Vaynberg/Zaqadzki, 8-5. Monica Lyskawa and Constantine were defeated, 8-1, at No.3 by Lipton-Huignard.
"We battled hard today," head coach Dan Silverstein said. "We had opportunities in doubles but were unable to win the big points when it counted."
Despite not being able to finish their matches, Lyskawa, Percival and Natalia Prinz had a strong showing. At No.1, Lyskawa was at 5-7, 3-1 against Victoria Vaynberg while Prinz was at 3-6, 6-2, 1-1 in her match against Catherine Zawadzki at No.2. Percival played at No.3 against Katie Bramante and went 7-6, 1-2 (7-3) before the match was called. Prinz and Kelly Walsh competed at No.2 doubles in a tight match against Bramante/Leong going 7-7.
West Virginia returns to action in the Lady Eagle Classic tomorrow, March 25, against Lamar at 10 a.m.
