MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University baseball team beat Eastern Michigan, 7-2, Sunday, March 19, at Hawley Field to complete a three-game sweep of the Eagles and pick up their ninth straight win.
Starting pitcher Matt Yurish (2-1) did a great job of getting out of some tight situations throughout the game to earn his second win of the year. Yurish pitched seven innings and allowed two runs on eight hits while striking out six.
Eastern Michigan (4-10) came out of the gates swinging as the Eagles scored a pair of runs on three hits and an error in the third inning. Yurish limited the damage by fielding a lined shot back at the mound to turn a bases loaded double play keeping the Eagles’ advantage at 2-0.
West Virginia got the offense going in the fourth inning when Jason Pape singled down the right field line to bring Kyle Matuszek across the plate. In the fifth, Justin Jenkins hit a solo shot over the left field fence, his fifth of the season, and Pape pulled an RBI single through the left side to put WVU on top, 3-2. The Mountaineers would add two runs in each of the next two innings to extend the lead out to five runs.
Eastern Michigan made one last run at the Mountaineers in the seventh inning when Aaron Powell singled to load the bases with one out. But Yurish settled down to fan Matt Moffett and shortstop Doug Nelms made a key diving stop and flip to second baseman Tyler Kuhn to get the final out of the inning.
Nelms had a great afternoon at the plate, going for 3 for 4 with two RBI and a stolen base. Matuszek and Pape also had two hits and a pair of RBI for West Virginia.
Eastern Michigan reliever Bobby Henderson (0-1) gets credit for the loss. Henderson gave up two runs on three hits and recorded just two outs before returning to the dugout.
The Mountaineers (15-3) continue their homestand as the St. Bonaventure Bonnies come to Hawley Field for a two-game mid-week series on Tuesday, March 21, at 5 p.m., and Wednesday, March 22, at 3 p.m.
