MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University track team traveled to Charlotte, N.C., on March 17-18, to open the outdoor season on the Irwin Belk Track at the Charlotte 49er Classic. The Mountaineers had a number of top-five finishers and event winners.
“It was great to have a few event champions and some personal bests,” coach Jeff Huntoon said. “This is a great way to start outdoors. We are going to continue to practice hard and get focused for the BIG EAST championships in May.”
Junior Jessica Czaikowski won the 200-meter dash with a time of 24.34. Czaikowski just barely edged Georgia State’s Ciji Canady (24.35) and Denice Vance (24.37) to win the event. Czaikowski also ran a personal best in the 100-meter dash prelims at 11.69.
Other event winners included senior Lindsey Clark, who won the javelin with a throw of 39.81 meters, and sophomore Maria Stover won the 1500-meter run at a top time of 4:43.80.
Halimah Bashir ran to a fifth place finish in the 400-meter dash (56.50) while Jamillah Nock ran impressively to take fourth in the 100-meter hurdles (14.93). Senior Junique Morris also landed a top five finish in the 100-meter dash at 11.98 seconds.
“This was excellent weather down here and very good competition for the team that we have,” Huntoon said.
WVU’s relay teams were also among the best at the meet. The 4x100 and 4x400 relay teams took third and fourth, respectively.
The Mountaineers return to the track on April 1, for the Terrapin Invitational in College Park, Md.
