Gymnastics: Burdette Nears Record in Home Finale

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The 22nd-ranked West Virginia University women’s gymnastics team will host its final home meet of the season on Saturday, March 18, at 1 p.m. against Rutgers and Temple at the WVU Coliseum.
Should the Mountaineers (15-6) win the meet, head coach Linda Burdette will surpass former WVU baseball coach Dale Ramsburg’s mark of 540 wins to become the school’s all-time leader in coaching wins for all sports.
Burdette, who owns a 32-year record of 539-217-4, passed current WVU volleyball coach Veronica Hammersmith’s mark of 537 wins last week.
West Virginia is a combined 74-1 all-time against Rutgers and Temple, including an unblemished mark of 37-0 against the Scarlet Knights.
The Mountaineers, with a 194.5 regional qualifying score (RQS), is the top team in the East Atlantic Gymnastics League, while Rutgers (12-8) is last in the league with a 190.885 RQS. Non-conference opponent Temple (5-17) owns an RQS of 185.025.
West Virginia is a perfect 8-0 this year in four home meets. The Mountaineers, averaging a team score of 194.25 at home this year, are coming off a first-place finish on March 10 at home against California and Pitt with a score of 194.45.
The meet will mark the final home meet for WVU seniors Alyssa DeSantis (Steubenville, Ohio) and Gretchen Richter (Madisonville, Texas). DeSantis (47) and Richter (40) have competed in a combined 87 meets during their careers.
