MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The East Atlantic Gymnastics League honored West Virginia University gymnasts in all three of its weekly awards, announced Tuesday by league officials.
West Virginia junior Janáe Cox was named EAGL gymnast of the week, freshman Mehgan Morris was named specialist of the week, and freshman Erica Watson was named rookie of the week.
Cox, a junior from Otisco, Ind., compiled six event wins and two all-around wins in two meets last week. Her 39.45 all-around score in WVU’s first-place finish at Pittsburgh on March 7 is the highest all-around score in the EAGL this year.
During the Pitt meet she posted wins on uneven bars and balance beam with season-high scores of 9.9, as well as a third win with another 9.9 on the floor exercise.
Four days later at a three-team home meet on March 10, Cox won the all-around with a 39.05, which included first-place marks on vault (9.75), bars (9.875) and floor (9.875).
This marks the second time of the season Cox has earned this award and the seventh time in her career.
Morris, who owns a league-record four EAGL rookie of the week awards, earned specialist of the week laurels for the first time in her career.
The Belle, W.Va., native captured her fourth and fifth wins of the season on the uneven bars with scores of 9.9 and 9.85 in the two meets last week. Morris has now tied her personal-best 9.9 on bars three times this year. She also had two second-place scores of 9.85 on the floor.
Watson earned her second rookie of the week award of the season after she won her first and second career event wins in a four-day span. The Levittown, Pa., native won a pair of vault titles, a career-high 9.85 at Pitt on March 7 and a 9.75 at home on March 10. Her six events scores during the week on vault, bars and floor were 9.675 or higher, including two 9.8 marks on bars.
West Virginia (15-6), ranked 22nd in the nation, hosts its final home meet of the season on March 18, at 1 p.m., in the WVU Coliseum against Rutgers and Temple.
