MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – This year’s men’s basketball team has managed to do what only two other West Virginia University teams have been able to do since 1962: finish the season nationally ranked by the Associated Press.
West Virginia (20-10) is ranked 22nd in the final AP poll released today to become the first WVU team in 17 years to finish ranked in the AP Top 25. The Associated Press does not rank teams following the NCAA tournament like the USA Today/ESPN Coaches poll does. WVU is ranked 23rd in this week’s USA Today/ESPN Top 25.
The Mountaineers finished the 1989 season ranked 17th and was ranked 14th in 1982. During an eight-year span from 1955-62, West Virginia finished ranked in every AP poll including the nation’s top ranking in 1958. The Mountaineers had five straight Top 10 finishes from 1957-61.
West Virginia was also ranked ninth at the end of the 1952 season.
In 2005, the Mountaineers’ Elite Eight NCAA tournament run helped them finish 12th in the Coaches Poll. West Virginia also finished 1998 ranked 18th by the Coaches following its NCAA tournament “Sweet 16” run.
It is also the first time a John Beilein-coached basketball team has finished a season ranked by the Associated Press.
Six Big East teams finished ranked by the Associated Press this year: Connecticut (2), Villanova (3), Pittsburgh (16), Syracuse (21), West Virginia (22) and Georgetown (23).
