MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia University women's tennis team fell to No. 54 DePaul, 6-1, in a hard fought match on Friday, March 10, in Morgantown, W.Va.
"We had opportunities and the girls know they'll need to bring the same effort on Sunday against St. John's," head coach Dan Silverstein said.
The Mountaineers (3-6, 2-1 BIG EAST) got a singles victory from sophomore Colleen Speaker at the No. 4 spot. The Morgantown, W.Va., native won 6-4, 6-2.
West Virginia played tough doubles, with the duo of junior Ashley Constantine and junior Catherine Koontz defeating Minaldinec-Rehusova, 8-4 at No.3. Senior Raynie Theis and sophomore Stacey Percival lost at No.1 to Csordas-Ganera, 8-3.
At No.2, junior Natalia Prinz and Speaker fell to Antunovic-Murisic, 9-8 (7-4) in one of the most highly contested matches of the day with three different match points.
"They were three points away from taking a 1-0 lead that could've changed the whole complexity of the game," Silverstein said.
In other singles action, sophomore Monica Lyskawa fell short to Csordas at No.1, 6-2, 6-4. At No. 2, Percival fell to Ganera, 6-4, 6-4, while No. 3 Prinz lost to Antunovic, 6-0, 6-2. Junior Kelly Walsh was defeated at No.5 by Minaldinec, 6-0, 6-3. Theis put up a tough fight against Rehusova in a battle at No.6, but fell short 4-6, 7-5 (11-9).
"DePaul showed why they're one of the top teams in the country," Silverstein said. "They dominated the top three singles, but we got a great win from Colleen at No.4 and a great effort from Raynie."
The Mountaineers will play their last home match on Sunday, March 12, against St. John's. Seniors Koontz and Theis will be honored during Senior Day recognition for their contributions to West Virginia Tennis. Match time is set for 11 a.m.
