MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - West Virginia University soccer player Devon McTavish has been signed to a contract for the 2006 season by Major League Soccer’s D.C. United, becoming the second player in school history to sign with an MLS team.
McTavish joins former Mountaineer and current FC Dallas defender Aaron Pitchkolan as the only MLS players to come from WVU.
“The players, coaches and staff are very proud of Devon and what he has been able to accomplish,” says head coach Mike Seabolt. “To get drafted by his hometown team and now to be offered a contract is simply amazing. Especially when you consider that four years ago, and even four months ago, he was on no one's radar of future players for Major League Soccer.”
McTavish and the rest of the team’s roster of 26 left the United States last weekend and D.C. United is currently training for the upcoming season in Spain. The team opens its season at home on April 2, when it hosts the New York-New Jersey Metro Stars at RFK Stadium at 5 p.m.

Meanwhile, junior forward Jarrod Smith earned his first action in an international game as he played 20 minutes in New Zealand National Team’s 2-1 win over Malaysia on Feb. 23, at North Harbour Stadium in Auckland, New Zealand. The Havelock North native recorded one shot on goal in his outing for the All Whites.
