MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University rifle team defeated Ohio State on Saturday, Feb. 4, in Columbus, Ohio, by a score of 4569-4556.
The Mountaineers (4-6) compiled a 2297 in smallbore and a 2282 in air rifle.
Junior Brian Launer tied the school record for the 120-shot course of fire with a two-gun aggregate total of 1162, tying the record set by teammate Amy Smith on Jan. 21 at Akron. The school records for this category were established prior to the 2004-05 season when the NCAA switched to a 60-shot course for each discipline.
Launer won the air rifle competition with a season-high 585, falling one point shy of his personal best and the school record that he owns for a 60-shot air rifle course.
Sophomore Lafe Kunkel placed second in smallbore with a team-best 580, finishing behind Ohio State’s Ryan Kohatsu who won the event with a 586.
Kunkel’s smallbore sum was one point shy of his season best set in the first match of the season against Army on Oct. 22.
Smith and Launer tied for third place in the smallbore discipline with scores of 577, as Smith’s smallbore score was two points shy of her season high set at Akron.
West Virginia returns to action for its NCAA qualifier on Friday, Feb. 10, when the Mountaineers meet Memphis in a neutral site match at Murray, Ky., beginning at 8 a.m.
