AKRON, Ohio – A few members of the West Virginia University indoor track team traveled to Akron, Ohio, to compete in the Akron Open Saturday, Feb. 4, in hopes of qualifying for the BIG EAST championships.
Three members of the team took part in the 200-meter dash. Junior Jessica Czaikowski, junior Shani Boone, and senior Junique Morris all posted BIG EAST qualifying times in the event. Czaikowski placed fourth with a personal best 24.76, while Boone and Morris ran 25.05 and 25.35, respectively, for the Mountaineers.
Freshman standout Raeleen Hunter ran a 2:15.36 in the 800-meter run and junior Abbie Stechschulte placed third in the long jump with a leap of 5.62m to also qualify for the BIG EAST championships in two weeks.
All five Mountaineers making the trip were able to make BIG EAST qualifying standards.
“I am very pleased with today’s performances,” head coach Jeff Huntoon said. “This is great that we could get some of these girls into the BIG EAST championships in a meet like this.”
The WVU indoor track team returns to State College, Pa., Feb. 10 & 11, for the Syklles-Babcock Cup.
