MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia fell two spots from 14th to 16th in this week’s Associated Press Top 25 men’s basketball poll, and three spots from 15th to 18th in this week’s ESPN/USA Today Coaches Top 25.
The Mountaineers (19-8, 10-5) went 1-1 last week, losing at Syracuse on Monday and defeating Louisville 68-84 last Saturday to snap a season-long three-game losing streak. West Virginia entertains No. 8-rated Pitt tonight at the WVU Coliseum in a 7 pm game that will be televised nationally on ESPN.
If West Virginia defeats Pitt tonight it will secure one of the four byes for next week’s Big East tournament because it will own tiebreakers over Pitt, Marquette and Georgetown. Should West Virginia lose to the Panthers, it would have to defeat Cincinnati on Saturday to receive a bye.
Pitt (21-4, 10-4) needs to win tonight’s game against West Virginia and probably Friday night’s game at home against Seton Hall to earn a bye. Otherwise, the Panthers could fall all the way down to a No. 6 seed if both Marquette and Georgetown win out this week. West Virginia could also potentially fall down to a sixth seed if it loses both its remaining games.
