MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University gymnastics team posted its second-highest score of the year and won a three-team meet on Sunday afternoon at the WVU Coliseum. The Mountaineers scored a 194.9 and defeated No. 25 New Hampshire (190.875) and William & Mary (184.65).
Junior Janáe Cox won the all-around with a season-high score of 39.425, the 28th-highest all-around score in WVU history. Her score was also the 24th all-around sum of 39.0 or better, which ties the school record held by Kristen Macrie (1999-2002).
Cox placed in the top two in all four of her events as she took first on floor by tying a season high of 9.925. Cox won uneven bars by also tying a season high with 9.875, placed second on vault with a 9.85, and tied for second on balance beam with a 9.775.
West Virginia gymnasts won all four events as sophomore Jaime Gold won vault by tying her career high of 9.875 set last week at Southern Utah. Senior Gretchen Richter won on balance beam with a season-high 9.825, which was her highest beam score since her 9.9 at the 2004 NCAA Southeast Regional.
West Virginia (9-5) had its best showing of the season on vault with a 49.05 in the first rotation. Four Mountaineers either tied or established season highs, as in addition to Gold, freshman Heather Izer (9.825), Richter (9.775) and junior Cheryl Goldenfield (9.725) all hit on their best vaults of the year.
The Mountaineers other events scores were a 48.825 on uneven bars, 48.3 on beam and 48.725 on floor, all three of which are their second highest scores of the year.
Freshman Mehgan Morris (9.825) and senior Alyssa DeSantis (9.75) placed second and third, respectively, behind Cox on the uneven bars. Morris also tumbled a personal best of 9.9 on the floor exercise.
West Virginia returns to action Saturday, March 4, at 1 p.m. when the Mountaineers travel to North Carolina for a four-team meet that also includes Pitt and Penn.
