Baseball: WVU Beats Penn State In 10

GREENVILLE, N.C. - The West Virginia University baseball team beat Penn State, 5-4, in extra innings Sunday, Feb. 26, in WVU’s final game at the Keith LeClair Classic in Greenville, N.C.
With two outs and the score tied 4-4 in the bottom of the 10th inning, centerfielder Adam White knocked the game-winning single the opposite way into left field to score David Carpenter and give WVU the 5-4 win.
Left-handed pitcher Matt Yurish got his second start of the year and gave up three runs on eight hits while striking out four in 4.1 innings. Dan Leatherman (2-0) came in to relieve Yurish and picked up his second win of the season. The junior from Walkersville, Md., went 5.2 innings and held the Nittany Lions to one run on six hits and struck out five.
Penn State jumped out on the Mountaineers in the third inning when Lance Thompson tripled down the right field line to score Matt Cavagnaro and Brian Ernst, giving the Nittany Lions a 2-0 lead. Thompson finished the game 2 for 5 with two RBIs to lead Penn State from the plate.
WVU answered in the bottom of the inning to score two runs with three straight doubles from Tyler Kuhn, Justin Jenkins, and Stan Posluszny. Posluszny went 2 for 5 knocked in his team-leading 10th RBI of the season.
Jenkins went 3 for 4 with two doubles and two RBIs to lead the Mountaineer offense, while teammate White finished 2 for 5 with two RBIs.
Freshman pitcher David Bumstead gave up the game-winning run and gets the loss for Penn State, who lost their third one-run game of the weekend.
WVU had seven doubles in its 13 hits, while Penn State (0-6) was able to pound out 14 hits from the Yurish and Leatherman.
The Mountaineers (5-1) finished up with a 2-1 record at the Keith LeClair Classic and return to the diamond Friday, March 3, to take on Furman in Conway, S.C.
