Rifle: WVU Shooting at GARC Championships

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University rifle team will close out its 2005-06 season this weekend when it competes in the Great America Rifle Conference (GARC) championships at the Patricia C. Lamar National Guard Readiness Center in Oxford, Miss.
Competition begins at 7 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 25, and runs through Sunday afternoon. The smallbore competition begins on Saturday morning, while the air rifle portion starts Saturday afternoon.
The GARC is considered the premier rifle league as four of the seven teams have qualified for the NCAA championships. The league includes reigning national champion Army, as well as defending GARC champion Nebraska.
West Virginia placed seventh last year with an aggregate score of 4576, but not without an impressive showing in smallbore, as the Mountaineers tied for fourth place in smallbore with a score of 2304.
Sophomore Amy Smith was a finalist in the smallbore competition last year and placed eighth with a career-high 582. Smith is averaging 570.3 this year.
Junior Brian Launer is the Mountaineers’ top smallbore shooter this year as he is averaging 577.6 and twice set career highs of 583 in the discipline.
West Virginia (4-7, 1-5 GARC) averages 4573.4 aggregate this year, including a 2287.5 smallbore average and a 2286.9 air rifle average.
