MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia has two more cracks at winning another game and qualifying for the 2006 Big East Women’s Basketball Championships in Hartford, Conn.
West Virginia gets another chance on Saturday night at South Florida.
The Mountaineers (12-13, 4-1) have lost six straight including a disappointing 70-58 performance against Notre Dame on Wednesday night. Since beating DePaul 82-70 on Jan. 31, West Virginia has not scored more than 58 points during its six-game losing streak.
Sophomore center Olayinka Sanni (13.0 ppg.) and sophomore forward Chakhia Cole (10.8 ppg.) are the only two West Virginia players averaging double figures. Cole led West Virginia with 16 points in the Notre Dame loss, followed by 12 each from Sanni and sophomore guard LaQuita Owens.
South Florida (17-10, 7-7) is also looking to get back on the winning track after losing three of its last five games, including a 65-56 decision at Louisville Tuesday night. Forward Ezria Parsons led USF with 17 points and seven rebounds against Louisville. USF’s leading scorer Jessica Dickson scored just 12 points against the Cardinals on 4 of 17 shooting. The 5-foot-11-inch forward is averaging 22.3 points per game and has made a team-best 57 3-point baskets.
South Florida’s seven Big East wins this year have come against DePaul, Syracuse, Providence, Notre Dame, Villanova, Seton Hall and Marquette.
The Bulls are 11-3 at home this year. This is the first time these two teams have met in women’s basketball.
