MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - Sparkle Davis scored 19 of her career-high 21 points in the first half to lead the West Virginia women’s team to a routine 77-42 victory over the Duquesne Dukes Friday night at the WVU Coliseum.
“We did what we were supposed to do tonight on our home floor and hopefully that gives us some confidence going into our week off for exams. Overall, I was pleased. I thought people did a good job coming off the bench and hustling and giving effort,” West Virginia coach Mike Carey said.
West Virginia (6-4, 0-1) came out of the gate on fire, shooting a blistering 74 percent on 17-23 shooting in the first half to build a 42-23 advantage at the break. Davis dominated play in the first period, going 8 of 9 from the field, including 3 of 4 from three-point distance
“I came in with confidence and trusted my shot. I knew I was going to get open looks so when I found myself open I relaxed and took the shot. Luckily they went in for me tonight,” Davis said.
Chakhia Cole provided a great floor game for the Mountaineers, scoring 15 points to go with six assists, four rebounds and two steals.
“I try to do whatever needs to be done in that particular game or moment. I live for the moment. Sparkle was on fire tonight, so I was always trying to find her and get her the ball,” Cole said.
Olayinka Sanni was the third Mountaineer in double figures, scoring 11 points on perfect 4-4 shooting from the field, despite being plagued by foul trouble for much of the game.
“She gives us a legit threat in the paint but she needs to learn to play with fouls because we really need her in there. We will need her physical play in the Big East schedule,” Carey said.
All 13 West Virginia players saw game action on Friday night and 11 different Mountaineers scored.
“It is always good to get everybody in. Everyone gets a little more excited when they get in there and everybody is ready to come to practice the next day. They work as hard as everybody else,” Carey said.
The Mountaineers held a 23-8 advantage in bench scoring.
West Virginia held Duquesne (5-5) to just 29 percent shooting for the game. The Dukes were led by Carmen Bruce with 13 points.
The Mountaineers now have a week off for finals before hosting Oakland at the WVU Coliseum on Dec. 16. Tip-off is set for 6:30 p.m.
