Chicago - Three West Virginia University wrestlers earned the right to compete in the second day of action at the 44th annual Midlands Wrestling Championships on Friday, Dec. 29, in Chicago, Ill., at Northwestern’s Welsh-Ryan Arena.
Junior 197-pounder Jared Villers, sophomore 174-pounder Kurt Brenner and sophomore 149-pounder David Jauregui remained alive to wrestle in their respective weight class consolation brackets, which begins at noon on Saturday. The championship finals, third and fifth-place finals will be wrestled at 7 p.m.
WVU finished the day in 15th-place with 17.5 points, just behind EWL foe Cleveland State who sits at 14th with 21.5 points. A total of 56 teams are in this year’s field.
Villers and Brenner advanced the furthest of any Mountaineers as they made it to the championship quarterfinals before dropping a bout. Both of their losses came to higher seeded wrestlers in the quarters.
Villers entered the day as the No. 6 seed and lived up to his reputation by defeating Iowa’s Dan Erekson by way of a 7-2 decision and followed that bout with a win by default against Dubuque’s Matt Wonderlin. The Akron, Ohio, native was not able to keep his momentum going though as he was knocked off in his only match of the second session by No. 3 seed Wynn Michalak of Central Michigan, 9-5.
Villers will face Luther College’s Alec Bonander in his first match on Saturday.
No. 5-seeded Brenner also started his day off with a pair of wins before his first loss. The Freedom, Pa., native defeated Indiana’s Trevor Perry, 4-3, in his first bout and then earned a 5-4 decision against Jared Deaguero of Adams State. Brenner met his match in the quarterfinals though when he fell to Rider’s Doug Umbehauer, 3-2. Umbehauer stands as the third-seeded wrestler in the tournament.
Brenner now faces J.D. Naig of Nebraska-Omaha in his first consolation bout on Saturday.
No. 3-seeded Jauregui posted a 3-1 record on the day with wins over Northwestern’s Marty Gould (8-4, decision), Sacred Heart’s Chris Davis (21-8 major) and Purdue’s Mark Powell (5-2, decision). The Santa Ana, Calif., native is slated to face Iowa State’s Cyler Sanderson in his first bout on Saturday.
